Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls is a roadside waterfall on U.S. 64, just a short drive from Franklin. At about 45 feet tall, the cascade flows over a cliff and was once accessible by car—visitors could actually drive behind it. Although that route is now closed to traffic, there’s a pull-off for photos and short walks to view the falls. Its easy access makes it one of the most photographed waterfalls in the area.
Dry Falls
Dry Falls, also located along U.S. 64 near Franklin, is an impressive 75-foot waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest. The highlight here is the walkway that allows visitors to walk behind the falling water without getting wet, giving the falls their name. A short trail and stairs lead from the parking area, and seasonal changes—especially fall colors—make each visit a little different.
Nantahala National Forest
Covering more than half a million acres, Nantahala National Forest offers extensive hiking, fishing, camping, and scenic drives. Popular activities include rafting in the Nantahala Gorge, hiking to fire towers like Wesser Bald, and exploring waterfalls along U.S. 64. The forest’s elevation ranges from 1,200 to 5,800 feet, creating diverse habitats with rich plant and wildlife.
Bartram Trail
The Bartram Trail traces the path of 18th-century naturalist William Bartram through North Carolina and Georgia. In the Franklin area, hikers can access segments that pass through Nantahala National Forest and up to Wayah Bald. Cullasaja Falls
Cullasaja Falls is a 250-foot cascade located along the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, part of the Cullasaja River Gorge. The waterfall is viewable from U.S. 64, but the road’s narrow shoulders make parking limited. Despite the challenges, it remains a popular sight thanks to its dramatic drop and surrounding cliffs. The Cullasaja River flows for about 23 miles through Macon County before joining the Little Tennessee River in Franklin. Mountain Waters Scenic Byway
Stretching for 61 miles, this byway winds through the Nantahala National Forest along U.S. 64, Wayah Road, and U.S. 19/74. The drive features waterfalls like Cullasaja Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Dry Falls, plus numerous pull-offs for hiking and photography. Wayah Bald Observation Tower
Located in the Nantahala National Forest, Wayah Bald Observation Tower is a stone fire tower built in 1937. From its summit, visitors can see sweeping views across North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The site is reached by a short paved path, and both the Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail cross nearby.

Departing from Bryson City, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (Bryson City Train Rides) offers scenic excursions through the Nantahala Gorge and along the Tuckasegee River.
